The modern car was born in Germany and this year it is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Carl and Bertha Benz, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, whose names today are common not only to insiders, were there at the birth. The 2011 anniversary is a good opportunity not only to get away BY car, but also to travel TO the car. We can suggest a few travel trips to bring you the perfect blend of adrenalin rush and romance, petrol and pleasure, horse power and people.
To mark the anniversary, the German Federal State of Baden-Wuerttemberg has proclaimed this “Automobilsommer” or “car summer” and will host 125 days of celebrations from 7 May to 10 September, including a number of events, inclusive packages and special offers for tourists all to do with “cars” and “mobility”.
Romantik Hotel Der Kleine Prinz
It’s a great opportunity to discover Germany’s oldest tourist route. The Black Forest Route, inaugurated in 1930, embodies everything that makes car travel so special: wonderful views which open up even from the car, side roads that each invite further discovery and distances between points which each driver can determine according to how they feel and what they want to see. The natural highlights along the route include the Hornisgrinde, the highest peak in the north of the Black Forest, the Mummelsee lake which is shrouded in legend, the Schliffkopf and the Schwarzenbachtalsperre valley dam. A good starting point for the experience is the Romantik Hotel Der Kleine Prinz in Baden-Baden. At the heart of this famous spa town, the hotel reflects the charming dreaminess of the ‘Little Prince’ story by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry which lends it its name. Bright colours and loving details such as an open fire, a sunny balcony and your own small tower characterise the guest rooms in this 120-year-old town villa. Don’t miss out on afternoon high tea with coffee, a selection of teas, cakes, petit fours and scones – a short imaginary excursion over to the British isles.
