In a short time you may learn about the diversity of the region, you will travel through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The alpine mountain ranges form the background for agricultural areas with vineyards, orchards and cow pastures. Most visitors come between April and October and especially the autumn with vintage, fruit harvest and the first morning mists over the lake is attractive.

For example it has not always got to be Santiago de Compostela: A part of the way of St. James, the so-called ViaJacobi, takes you for 20 kilometres from Schwarzenburg to Fribourg (difficulty: easy; required fitness: middle). This section is thought of as one of the most exciting in Switzerland and was used by pilgrims already in the Middle Ages – pavings from river pebbles and parts which are built into the rocks are impressive witnesses. In the heart of the old town of Fribourg the Romantik Hotel Du Sauvage welcomes you. The building originates from the 16th century and the splendid history is still part of the charming ambience. To interpret cuisine classics so that guests will recognise them and experience creativity and contemporary circumstances at the same time – this is the art many chefs try to fulfil today. Not always does the difficult balancing act between well-known traditional and innovation work out. An example proving that it can work out and still be cook-able is the recipe we got from Klaus Deutschmann, chef at the Romantik Hotel Gasthof Post in the Austrian Koessen: Sauerkraut bacon canneloni

The Austrian state Tyrol borders on Germany, Switzerland and Italy – perhaps this is the reason for its diversity. Already in history Tyrol was a central intersection of European roads. And still today it is the state of Austria with the highest rate of overnight stays. The villages and valleys are especially poplar with winter sports enthusiasts. But there is also a lot to discover in Tyrol in summer, as is proved by the following examples:

Romantik Hotel Böglerhof

Romantik Hotel Böglerhof

The Romantik Hotel Boeglerhof in Alpbach looks back on a long history. First used as workshop for a bow maker it became a court from the 15th century onwards. At that time the region was rich because of the silver mining. The continuing history is proven by a letter of the Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer. In 1933 Alfons Moser purchased the Boeglerhof by auction and brought the first British tourists to the village in the following years.

“Rest in peace” and similar epitaphs are not to be found on the museums cemetery at Kramsach, 7 km of Alpbach. Here the phrases are a lot more down-to-earth and funnier. The collection, most of it from the 19th century, is unique and surprises with sayings that are supposed to make the suffering easier. For example: “Hier schweigt Johanna Vogelsang, sie zwitscherte ihr Leben lang.” (Here remains silent Johanna Vogelsang – singing bird -, who chirped all her life.) or “Hier ruht mein lieber Arzt Herr Grimm und alle, die er heilte, neben ihm.” (Here lies my much-loved doctor Mr Grimm and all, whom he healed, next to him.). Learn more about this unusual way to treat death and dying.
