The major festival season of 2011 has only just started, but it is already difficult to get tickets for some events. It is therefore good that there is such a great selection of alternatives. Music from classical to pop, venues from lake stages to industrial plants, theatre, dance – the festival summer of 2011 has a lot to offer.

Romantik Jugendstilhotel Bellevue

The Moselle Music Festival 2011 offers the “Classical Vineyard” programme, which lasts from 2 June to 3 October 2011, includes unusual venues from a synagogue and a vineyard to a bell-casting workshop and has an unusual repertoire. Approximately 50 concerts in 30 venues along the river Moselle offer a wide spectrum of classical music. The Romantik Jugendstilhotel Bellevue is the ideal starting point for discovering the cultural and culinary treasures of the Moselle. Already at the beginning of the 20th century, when the venue still had another name, it had been a home away from home for famous people such as Baron von Thyssen and the actor Heinz Ruehmann.

Romantik Hotel Oberwirt

Romantik Hotel Oberwirt

OK, so most people associate the scent of spring more with something flowery and sweet. But take a stroll through Central Europe’s extensive areas of woodland right now and it will be the scent of wild garlic in your nostrils. Wild garlic, also known as ramsons, bear’s garlic, wood garlic and by many other names, is related to chives, the onion and ordinary garlic. Wild garlic was for a long time forgotten in the kitchen, but for a few years now it has been enjoying something of a renaissance.

Note: if you want to collect wild garlic: do not confuse it with lily of the valley, the new leaves of meadow saffron or the young plants of the variegated arum – these three plants are all extremely poisonous.

We have selected two delicious recipes using wild garlic for you. The first comes from the Romantik Hotel Oberwirt in Marling, South Tyrol.

Saunas are a standard in all Spa Hotels, and even some hotels that do not focus on spa offer this opportunity for healthy relaxation and recuperation. The spectrum of “heated rooms” is wide, the main difference being in terms of temperature and humidity. Certain Romantik hotels offer “new” options to sweat to match the unpleasant time of the year.

The new exterior sauna at the Romantik Hotel Schloss Rheinfels in St. Goar is designed in the style of a historical “Rhine wash house” and complements what the “AusZeit” spa area has to offer. Through the glass front of the 17 square metre wooden sauna, perspiring guests have an unparalleled view of the Rhine Valley below the hotel. “In common with most of the facilities at Schloss Rheinfels, the ‘Rhine wash house’ was made exclusively to our own plans and ideas,” explains owner and manager Gerd Ripp. “Under the tagline ‘Spa à la region’, only regional craftsmen were hired and the hand-painted works on the inside of the sauna were also painted by a local artist.” The “Rhine wash house” is open all year-round, is just a few metres from the entrance to the spa area and offers quite exceptional sauna indulgence especially in the snow and ice.

A truly Bavarian winter sport is waiting in the monastery garden: curling

A truly Bavarian winter sport is waiting in the monastery garden: curling

Bergen is a district of Neuburg on the Danube, located not far from Ingolstadt. The church dominating the town was first mentioned in 787. The pilgrimage church was the destination of many pilgrims for centuries. Even today, stopping in Bergen is worthwhile for travellers, due in no small part to the Romantik Hotel Zum Klosterbraeu. In the pre-Christmas season, the parlours and rooms are adorned with festive Christmas decorations, and the air is filled with the scent of freshly baked Christmas cookies. And in order to loose the excess pounds put on by all the treats, a truly Bavarian winter sport is waiting in the monastery garden: curling. But don’t worry, even “out-of-towners” are allowed to join the game. (more…)

Christmas markets are a good opportunity to get in the mood for the holidays. Alongside the shrill funfair-like variants there are still more traditional, reflective variants in existence where one can take a little time out. Let the Christmassy music sprinkle over you, deeply inhale the scent of fir-trees and spices, warm your hands on toasted almonds and hot grog, let your gaze follow strings of lights and lanterns.

In the midst of beautiful East Holstein’s Switzerland and only 12 km north-east of Kiel lies the Dobersdorf manor dating from 1770. The lake and the manor house form the picturesque backdrop for a traditional Christmas market on the five weekends before Christmas. More than 150 booths await you in the yard, in the two barns and in the Cavalier’s House. Throughout the pre-Christmas period you will also be able to select your Christmas tree from a large selection of Nordmann firs and acquire game specialities from our own hunting.
